蔺相如知廉颇之意，乃退避三舍，不愿与之争执。然赵王闻之，谓蔺相如曰：“子何故退避三舍？”蔺相如答曰：“臣闻之，‘知彼知己，百战不殆。’臣与廉颇同朝为官，若与之争执，必不利于国家。故臣退避三舍，以国家大义为重。”

Lian Po was a distinguished general of the State of Zhao. Lian Xiangru was a wise and virtuous minister of the State of Zhao. They were both very good friends and served in the same government, working together to plan for the state's interests.

Lian Po was skilled in military affairs, achieving many remarkable victories and intimidating the enemy states. Lian Xiangru was exceptionally intelligent, often presenting excellent strategies that helped Zhao turn the tide of danger and crisis. However, their personalities were quite different; Lian Po was fierce and Lian Xiangru was gentle and refined.

One day, Lian Xiangru offended Lian Po for some matter, and Lian Po became angry, breaking off all relations with him. Lian Xiangru, aware of Lian Po's anger, retreated three miles to avoid confrontation. When King Zhao heard about this, he asked Lian Xiangru, "Why did you retreat three miles?" Lian Xiangru replied, "I have heard it said, 'Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated in battle.' I am a minister in the same government as Lian Po, and if we argue, it will not be beneficial to the state. Therefore, I retreated three miles to prioritize the interests of the state."

Upon hearing this, Lian Po felt guilty and carried a spear as a sign of penance, going to apologize to Lian Xiangru. Lian Xiangru also forgave Lian Po without holding a grudge, and from then on, they became friends again. From that point on, they worked together with one heart, serving the State of Zhao, and made Zhao prosperous for a time.
