燕太子丹质于秦，闻之，乃请归。

太子丹使人谓秦王曰：“燕国虽小，然亦诸侯也，不敢以臣礼奉秦。今秦王暴虐无道，诸侯皆欲共诛之。燕太子丹，虽小，然志气慷慨，欲为天下除害。若秦王肯赦免燕国，丹将献上燕国地图，愿为秦王效忠。若秦王不赦，丹愿以死相殉。”

秦王曰：“太子丹，汝敢如此无礼！燕国地图，汝敢献上！吾必诛汝！”

太子丹曰：“丹虽死，燕国地图仍在。吾虽死，丹之志犹在！”

太子丹遂自杀。

秦王闻之，大怒，令太子丹之首悬于咸阳城门，以示众。

荆轲闻太子丹死，悲愤填膺，遂欲报仇。

荆轲曰：“太子丹，吾之友也，吾必为太子丹报仇！”
