昔蔺相如为赵国使于秦，秦王欲以十五城易赵和氏璧。相如曰：“璧有瑕，请以示王。”王遂发璧，使相如持璧归赵。相如至赵，赵王大悦，封相如为上卿。秦王闻之，怒，欲攻赵。蔺相如曰：“王虽强，终不能得璧。臣请以死守之。”赵王曰：“善。”相如乃请秦王以和氏璧归赵，秦王许之。蔺相如遂以璧归赵，赵王益厚待之。秦王知赵王坚不可拔，乃罢兵。

廉颇者，赵之良将也。蔺相如为上卿，颇曰：“吾所以去病，以先国家之急而后私仇也。今相如虽为上卿，吾观其为人，徒以口舌取宠，岂足以托国事哉？”颇欲击相如，相如闻之，乃避匿。颇怒，遂攻蔺相如之居。相如乃请赵王，愿以璧归秦，以解赵之危。赵王许之。相如遂以璧归秦，秦王大悦，封相如为上卿。

In ancient times, when Lian Xiangru served as an envoy of the State of Zhao in the State of Qin, the King of Qin wanted to exchange the jade of the State of Zhao for fifteen cities. Lian Xiangru said, "The jade has flaws, please show it to the king." The king then sent the jade, and Lian Xiangru took it back to Zhao. When Lian Xiangru returned to Zhao, the king was delighted and appointed him as the highest minister. Upon hearing this, the King of Qin was angry and wanted to attack Zhao. Lian Xiangru said, "Although the king is strong, he will never get the jade. I am willing to die to guard it." The king agreed. Lian Xiangru then asked the king to return the jade to Zhao, and the king agreed. Lian Xiangru then returned the jade to Zhao, and the king treated him even better. Knowing that the king of Zhao was resolute, the King of Qin decided to withdraw his troops.
